Description
- The “Non-Eucharistic” Mantle: Unlike the chasuble, which is reserved strictly for the celebration of Mass, the cope is used for almost all other solemn liturgical functions.
- Wider Liturgical Application: It is the standard vestment for the celebrant during processions, solemn blessings (such as the blessing of ashes or palms), burials, and the solemn celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours.
- Symbol of Office: The cope can be worn by bishops, priests, and deacons when they preside over sacramental celebrations outside of Mass, such as baptisms and weddings.
- Historical Evolution: Originally derived from a secular raincoat (pluviale), its ornamental hood (the “shield”) is a vestige of its practical origin as protection against elements during outdoor processions.
